This brilliant song by Akurat helps us remember the difference between “for you” (dla ciebie) and “with you” (z Tobą).

In a previous post, we saw that “for you” is “dla ciebie” (thanks to Myslovitz).
If you’re new to Polish, you might wonder why “you” is sometimes “ciebie” and sometimes “tobą”. The short answer is that in Poland, prepositions rule the world, or at least the language: tiny words like “z” and “dla” determine the fate of the words that follow.
“Ciebie” and “tobą” are two of several grammatical forms of the basic (nominative) form of you, which is “ty”.
It’s a dream if you’re into grammar and a pain for everyone else! If grammar tables make you feel nauseous, you might want to start by practising some of the most common phrases instead of trying to eat the whole buffet at once. “Lubię mówić z Tobą” on repeat!
