They say teaching is the best way to learn. After 10 years of struggling with Polish, I’m taking the matter into my own hands and will become my own teacher. If you’re struggling too, we can learn together 😁
When I moved to Poland in early 2012, I made myself two promises:
- I’d start learning the lingo straight away, and
- I would never give up.
I definitely kept my first promise. And the second one, well… I’ve never felt that I’ve given up, but for sure I’ve had many periods (some of them very long) when I haven’t found the time or motivation to study.
During the last 13,5 years, I’ve tried pretty much every possible method. From courses, group classes and private lessons to apps, podcasts, books, articles and videos… See which methods have worked best here.
Still, I’m still very much struggling with one particular pain point: Not understanding spoken Polish.
I can read a Polish newspaper but if I turn on the news on TV, the words turn into a mush. I can have a conversation with Polish teachers and other foreigners, but quickly get lost in a group with Polish natives.
This partly explains why I decided to share Polish phrases through songs. Music is one way to get used to the sounds and hear specific phrases on repeat.
But I also think it’s a shame that relatively few people in the world can enjoy Polish music!
Check out the songs I’ve recommended so far or have a look at my Sing Polish playlists on Spotify or YouTube.
